Spring Cleaning for Your Body: Supporting the Body’s Natural Reset

As the days grow longer and the first signs of spring appear, many of us feel the urge to open the windows, clean our homes, and start fresh. Interestingly, our bodies respond to seasonal changes in a similar way. Spring is a time when nature shifts from dormancy to growth—and our bodies often respond with renewed energy, changes in appetite, and a desire for lighter foods.

Rather than extreme cleanses or restrictive programs, naturopathic medicine focuses on supporting the body’s natural ability to process and eliminate waste through everyday habits, nourishing foods, and connection to the outdoors.

Your body already has sophisticated systems designed to do this work every day.

The Body’s Built-In Pathways

Your body continuously processes and eliminates unwanted compounds through several organs and systems:

The Liver

The liver is one of your body’s most important support systems. It acts like a natural filter and processing center, helping break down substances you take in—such as food, medications, and environmental exposures—so they can be safely used by your body or removed when no longer needed.

Digestion

A healthy digestive system allows the body to properly move waste out through regular bowel movements. While also selectively absorbing necessary nutrients required for healthy, happy organs.

Skin

Through sweat and circulation, the skin plays a supportive role in elimination. The skin is also the barrier to the outside world, keeping our internal self safe. Protect it with sunscreen daily!

Kidneys

These organs filter the blood and remove waste through urine. They are constantly working to maintain balance—eliminating toxins while preserving essential nutrients—making them vital for the body’s natural detoxification process.

When these systems are supported through nutrition and lifestyle, the body is very effective at maintaining balance and naturally detoxing.

Food as Medicine: Seasonal Support

Spring naturally offers foods that help support these pathways. Many early-season vegetables contain bitter compounds, fiber, and phytonutrients that assist digestion and liver function.

Helpful foods to include this time of year:

Leafy greens – arugula, dandelion greens, spinach, and kale

Cruciferous vegetables – broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts ● Fresh herbs – parsley, cilantro, and mint

Lemon and citrus – often used to stimulate digestion

Fiber-rich foods – beans, lentils, and whole grains

Bitter and green foods in particular have traditionally been used in herbal and nutritional medicine to help stimulate digestion and support liver activity.

A simple way to incorporate them is by building meals around large colorful salads, vegetable-rich soups, or sautéed greens

Hydration and Daily Movement

Two of the most effective ways to support the body’s natural cleansing processes are also the simplest. Hydration supports kidney function, circulation, and digestion.

Teas absolutely count toward your daily hydration—so there’s no need to force down plain water if you enjoy a little flavor. Try cold-infused teas or naturally flavored water made with fresh ingredients for a refreshing twist.

One of my favorites is a simple blend of fresh strawberries and mint added to a jug of water and chilled in the refrigerator. Infused water can be stored for up to three days, so you can make a batch and enjoy it throughout the week. Feel free to get creative—the basic formula is fruit + herbs

You can also make a refreshing cold brew of tea to sip on all week. A simple but delicious recipe is overnight hibiscus tea. Make it by placing tea bags or dried hibiscus in water, letting it steep overnight, then straining it in the morning. It’s a bright, flavorful way to stay hydrated all day.

Supporting the Skin

The skin is our largest organ and an important interface between the body and the environment. Practices that support skin function include:

● Daily sunscreen

● Regular physical activity that promotes sweating

● Dry skin brushing before showering

● Spending time outdoors and getting fresh air

● Nourishing the skin with healthy fats and hydration

These simple habits support circulation and the skin’s natural processes.

A Gentle Seasonal Reset

Rather than drastic programs, the most effective way to support your body in spring is through consistent, sustainable habits

● Eat seasonally to keep the harmony between body and nature

● Stay hydrated, and make it fun

● Prioritize digestive health

● Spend time outdoors

● Move your body daily in way that brings joy

Small changes practiced consistently often create the greatest benefits.

Spring reminds us that renewal doesn’t have to be extreme—it can simply be a gradual return to balance, nourishment, and connection with nature
