About Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
GERD, also known as acid reflux or acid indigestion, is a common condition. It occurs when the valve malfunctions and stomach acids rise up into the esophagus. This results in a chronic burning sensation in the throat and chest area and can lead to a multitude of secondary conditions.
GERD is often exacerbated by the particular foods an individual eats, like citrus or fatty foods, but caffeine and alcohol can initiate symptoms. Your diet is really key and the first line of defense in controlling symptoms of GERD.
Easing GERD Symptoms with Yoga
Lifestyle choices, such as practicing yoga can compliment a whole body approach to promote good digestion and alleviate symptoms of GERD. Certain poses, such as reclined hip openers, can actually lower digestive acidity and at the same time increase blood circulation to your abdominal region. In fact, many restorative poses generally give your digestive system a well needed break.

Try This Easy Hip Opener Pose
Follow these 3 steps for the Supta Baddha Konasana reclined hip opener pose:
1. Lay on your back flat, over a folded blanket, or a bolster for a supported pose
2. Bring the soles of your feet together and let your knees fall away from each other. Let your groins open and your legs create a diamond shape
3. Stay in this pose for 1-2 minutes to allow your body to soften and release
Yoga Dos and Don’ts
Do
Try slow flow Hatha yoga over strenuous practices like power or ashtanga. Semi-inversions, like Legs Up the Wall pose, can be beneficial and restorative, as these generally keep the circulation of blood boosted in your core region.
Don’t
If you are actively experiencing acid reflux symptoms, avoid yoga poses that compress your abdominal regions, like Deep Forward Bends. Also avoid full inversions, such as Headstand, as these generally take blood away from the abdominal region.
Moving Forward
Practicing yoga is just one holistic approach to support and manage your digestive health. It cannot solely address the issue altogether. It is recommended to check with your doctor when beginning a new exercise regimen.
